Margaret River Region: the key areas
Margaret River Town
The main town is the commercial and services hub of the region — a small country town with a strong café culture, good restaurants, and the widest range of accommodation at the most competitive prices.
Price range: $130–$280/night for standard rooms and studio apartments.
Best for: Budget and mid-range travellers, those planning to tour the wine region extensively, families.
Distance from wineries: Most major cellar doors (Vasse Felix, Leeuwin Estate, Cullen Wines) are within 10–20km. The town makes an efficient base for a winery tour circuit.
Yallingup
Yallingup is the northern beach village of the region, 30km north of Margaret River town. It's more upmarket and boutique, with a famous surf break, luxury retreats, and premium accommodation options.
Price range: $200–$600/night for boutique retreats and self-contained cottages.
Best for: Couples, honeymoons, surf enthusiasts, those wanting a more remote and quiet experience.
What's there: Yallingup Beach, Ngilgi Cave, Smiths Beach, Canal Rocks. The Caves Road cellar door circuit runs through this area.
Booking strategy: Yallingup accommodation books out 2–3 months ahead for long weekends and school holidays. Cottage and retreat supply is limited.
Dunsborough
Dunsborough is a family-friendly coastal town at the northern end of the Margaret River region, 25km north of Yallingup. It has a good beach, family-friendly accommodation, and is the gateway to Cape Naturaliste (lighthouse, whale watching in season).
Price range: $150–$350/night for apartments and houses.
Best for: Families, those primarily interested in beaches rather than wineries, whale watching season (September–November).
Distance to wineries: The southern cellar doors (Vasse Felix, Watershed, etc.) are 40–50km south — manageable but less convenient than staying in town.
Cowaramup
Cowaramup is a small agricultural town 15km north of Margaret River, known for its bovine-themed main street and the nearby cellar doors. For those primarily focused on wine touring, staying in Cowaramup puts them centrally in the wine region.
Price range: $150–$300/night.
Best for: Wine-focused visitors, couples.
Margaret River seasonal pricing
Peak periods: Christmas/New Year, Easter, school holidays, and the Margaret River Pro surfing competition (usually April/May).
Best value: April–June and September–November. Weather is still excellent (warm days, no summer heat), crowds are manageable, and accommodation is 20–40% cheaper than peak.
