Tasmania's accommodation hubs
Hobart
Hobart is the capital and the logical base for most Tasmania trips. The Salamanca Market, MONA (Museum of Old and New Art), Battery Point heritage precinct, and Mt Wellington are all accessible from a Hobart base.
Price range: $130–$350/night in Hobart CBD and Salamanca.

Seasonal pricing: Hobart is year-round but Dark Mofo (June) and MONA FOMA (January) festivals cause significant price spikes. Book 2–3 months ahead for festival periods.
Launceston
Launceston is Tasmania's second city, 2.5 hours north of Hobart. The Cataract Gorge is a 10-minute walk from the CBD, and the Tamar Valley wine region starts 10km north. Launceston is the standard base for Cradle Mountain visitors (1.5 hours south).
Price range: $120–$250/night for mid-range CBD properties.
Why visit: Launceston has genuinely strong food culture (arguably better than Hobart's equivalent price-to-quality ratio), the historic Cataract Gorge, and convenient access to northern Tasmania's natural attractions.
Booking tip: Launceston hotel prices are 15–20% below Hobart equivalents on average, making it a genuine value option for Tasmania stays.
Cradle Mountain
Cradle Mountain accommodation is concentrated in the village at the park entrance. Options range from the premium Cradle Mountain Lodge (Peppers-managed) to self-contained cabins and a small caravan park.
Price range: $180–$600/night for peak season lodge accommodation.
Book this early: Cradle Mountain accommodation in summer (December–February) and the popular autumn colour season (April–May) is heavily booked. 3–4 months advance booking is standard.
Budget alternative: Stay in Devonport (1.5 hours) or Launceston and day-trip to Cradle Mountain. Less immersive but significantly cheaper.
Freycinet Peninsula
The Freycinet Peninsula is home to Wineglass Bay, one of the world's most photographed beaches. Coles Bay is the small town at the entrance to the national park.
Price range: $180–$450/night for Coles Bay self-contained accommodation.
What to know: Accommodation in Coles Bay is limited. The Freycinet Lodge (inside the park) and Edge of the Bay Resort are the main full-service options. Self-contained units and cottages are the majority of supply.
Booking strategy: Book 2–3 months ahead for summer. Freycinet accommodation books out faster than almost anywhere else in Tasmania during January.
Bruny Island
Bruny Island is a short ferry ride from Kettering (30km south of Hobart). Known for its cheese, oysters, honey, and the dramatic landscapes of South Bruny.
Price range: $150–$400/night for island accommodation.
Getting there: The Bruny Island Ferry runs from Kettering — a 15-minute crossing, multiple daily services.
Note: Bruny Island accommodation is limited and books out quickly. Most visitors do a day trip from Hobart — the full cheese and oyster circuit is achievable in a day with an early start.
