Whitsundays Accommodation Guide: Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island and Beyond

The Whitsundays is one of Australia's most popular holiday destinations — 74 islands off the Queensland coast, anchored by Airlie Beach on the mainland. Accommodation options range from budget hostels in Airlie to island resort exclusivity at Hamilton Island and Hayman Island.

The fundamental choice: mainland or island?

Your first decision determines everything else. Mainland accommodation (Airlie Beach, Cannonvale) is cheaper, gives more flexibility for day trip choices, and has better dining and nightlife options. Island accommodation is a resort experience — premium-priced, with fewer alternatives, but immersive.

Stay mainland if: You're planning multiple sailing or day-trip tours, travelling on a budget, want flexibility to change your activity plans, or are visiting for 2–3 nights as part of a longer Queensland trip.

Stay on an island if: You want a specific resort experience, are celebrating an anniversary or honeymoon, are happy to pay resort prices for meals and activities, or want to stay on a working coral cay.

Airlie Beach (mainland base)

Airlie Beach is the Whitsundays' tourism hub — a small but buzzing beach town with the Airlie Beach Lagoon, Abel Point Marina, and a strip of restaurants, bars, and tour operators. It's the departure point for virtually all Whitsunday sailing tours.

Price range: $80–$250/night for hotels and serviced apartments.

Best for: Budget and mid-range travellers, backpackers, sailing tour departures, multi-day itinerary flexibility.

What to know: Airlie Beach town is small and most accommodation is within 10 minutes walk of the marina. The further from the Esplanade, the cheaper the rates — Cannonvale (2km west) is the value option.

Booking tip: School holiday pricing (January, July) in Airlie Beach can be 40–60% above standard rates. Book 6–8 weeks ahead for these periods.

Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island is the Whitsundays' most developed island resort, with a small township, an airport, multiple resort tiers, and direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

Price range: $280–$800+/night depending on property tier.

Accommodation tiers:

Best for: Families, couples, those wanting a full resort experience with golf, multiple restaurants, and Great Barrier Reef access.

Flights: Jetstar and Qantas fly directly to Hamilton Island Airport — no ferry required. From Airlie Beach, a ferry takes 60 minutes.

Daydream Island

Daydream Island Resort is a smaller, more intimate island 20 minutes from Airlie Beach by ferry. It underwent a major $100 million renovation in 2019 and is one of the better-value island resort options in the Whitsundays.

Price range: $250–$550/night all-inclusive.

Best for: Couples, mid-range resort experience without the crowds of Hamilton Island.

Long Island and Hayman Island

Long Island: A smaller, less-commercialised island with the Elysian Retreat eco-resort (adults-only, premium). More limited but higher-quality than Daydream.

Hayman Island (InterContinental): The Whitsundays' most exclusive island resort, now operating as InterContinental Hayman Island Resort. Starting around $800/night, it is the prestige option for the region.

Seasonal pricing

SeasonMainland (Airlie Beach)Hamilton Island
Peak (school holidays)$160–$250/night$350–$600/night
Shoulder (May, September)$110–$180/night$280–$450/night
Off-peak (Feb–April)$80–$140/night$240–$380/night

The Whitsundays are a year-round destination — Queensland's tropical climate means no true "bad season" though cyclone risk exists December–March. The best weather is April–October (dry season), when sailing conditions are optimal.
